Maihama Retail (Ikspiari)
Tokyo, Japan

Design Consultant Paul Ma design, Architects

Maihama, today called Ikspiari, was designed as a thematic theater district and retail complex outside of Tokyo Disneyland. The story line to the thematic design is based on early mythical people, named Maihamans, who came ashore and built the village, “Lower Tableau” with skilled craftsmanship. Later generations built the “Upper Tableau” with refined milling craftsmanship. From these early roots evolved an urban center that delights the senses with lighting, artistry, captured sounds of water and wind, and the smells of food, all to celebrate life. The three-block destination retail center provides a multiplex theater that brings back the small theater district feel all under one roof. In addition is the Whale Building and Reading Room, two adjoining drum-like buildings that are hands-on discovery centers for children. The complex is adjoined by a Disney hotel, and a Disney rail station that connects to Disneyland.
