Marian Medical Center

The 40,000 sf addition to the Marian Medical Center provides a new catheterization lab, surgical suite, cardiovascular department, and central processing department, while an 8,625 sf of remodeled area provides a same-day surgery suite. To shield the view of the roof-top mechanical units from a future nursing tower, umbrella-like penthouse roof forms were employed. As a counterpoint to the roof form, the west end of the addition is a composition of floating curved planes, announcing the state-of-the-art surgical suites within and allowing daylight to penetrate deep within the building's core. The use of natural light was considered key to the design. To enhance staff operations, light monitors were located over second floor interior spaces and light well terraces have been provided in basement spaces.
